I'm a 21 year old Melbournian, I work in a boutique brewery that's open to the public with the idea of choosing one of our numerous beers and brewing it yourself, Right down to the bottling. After a number of months of slowly learning the different characteristics of beers and their distinctive differences, I've decided to start at number 1 and work my way through the 'local tap-house's 100 hottest craft beers of 2010' with the hope that by the end of it I'll be able to tell the difference between an Indian pale ale and a Pilsner with 25grams of extra Saaz hops.

NUMBER 10
HAWTHORN BREWING CO. PALE ALE

A not too heady, but crisp and fresh head on the pour, but still enough, with nice medium style lacing.

The colour is a rich, amber honey tint and has a strong resemblance to a fortified wine, a Tokay mostly. this is such a fantastic looking beer, i couldn't wait to get stuck into it.

The Hawthorn Pale Ale has such an incredible bouquet, one of sweet fruit and honey, there are incredibly strong hints of honey, so combined give off hints of fruitcake, along with spices, a very pleasant aroma.

From the very first sip, the most pronounced flavor was honey, according to the brewers theres no honey in it, but the rich sweetness and flavour was further away from a traditional pale ale and was less hoppy than others.

The only downside to this beer is that i don't think it could be a 'session beer' as you could only get through about 4 before the sweetness got the better of you! still a fantastic drop and i can see this one going down easily!

Well done hawthorn brewing co, a fantastic brew!
