I'm a 21 year old Melbournian, I work in a boutique brewery that's open to the public with the idea of choosing one of our numerous beers and brewing it yourself, Right down to the bottling. After a number of months of slowly learning the different characteristics of beers and their distinctive differences, I've decided to start at number 1 and work my way through the 'local tap-house's 100 hottest craft beers of 2010' with the hope that by the end of it I'll be able to tell the difference between an Indian pale ale and a Pilsner with 25grams of extra Saaz hops.

NUMBER 9
MCLAREN VALE DRY

The Mclaren Vale Dry, sister of the Mclaren Vale Ale. I was extremely excited to test this one after trying the McLaren Vale Ale.

So upon pouring from the bottle, at first it was a clear gold but as i reached the bottom of the bottle the sediment turned it to a very cloudy, golden brown. Not very heady at all and quickly receeded to a virtually laceless brew.

The aroma was straight away a malty, yeast one. Strong hints of caramel to it as well. Not very hoppy if at all. Made for a unique smelling brew.

The taste, the taste, the taste. TO be honest straight away i didn't find this at all groundbreaking. What was a rich...ish but still quite bold and strong flavour initially quickly died off the pallette and let no aftertastes or anything to develop and linger on. This beer doesn't come close to the artistry of the McLaren Vale Ale but as i am aware it is a different brew and has different characteristics, just not ones i usually get along with, feel free to make up your own mind though!
